The GCE A-level programmes are taught over one or two years. The programmes begin in September and January and students usually take four or five subjects in their first year and three or four subjects in their second year.
The A-level programmes are intensive and very demanding. The College expects its students to show industry, organisation and commitment.
The University Foundation Programme for international students is a three term course that can be started in September or January. It comprises a mix of pathway specific and compulsory, core skill units.
Teaching focuses on examination success. This is achieved through the acquisition of knowledge, examination technique and thinking skills. The teachers are experts in their respective fields; they teach their students the information they need in the form that they need it. The College’s location in the heart of one of the world’s most academic cities, enables the College to recruit first class teachers. Alongside their subject expertise they have a passion for teaching and enthusiasm for working with young adults. They strive to inspire their students to develop a genuine interest in and deep understanding of their subjects but the drive for examination success is crucial.
The teachers are selected because they have the characteristics that lead to student success. They display a commitment to teaching, first class communication skills, and the ability to inspire and motivate. They demand very high standards from their students.
All of the programmes are taught in classes of not more than ten students. The small class size enables the needs of individuals to be addressed without losing the benefits of group work. The class size is particularly important for international students. It enables them to adjust quickly to the rigour of the syllabuses; it promotes their proficiency in the English language.
Teachers are glad to make appointments to meet students outside of classes to deal with questions that cannot be addressed during formal lessons. The spend a significant amount of lesson time on the application of knowledge to examination type questions.
Students receive a full set of course notes for each of their subjects. The notes are written by the course teachers and supplement the standard textbooks and other reading material. The notes are a key element of teaching; they enhance the opportunity for discussion, questions and answers, and problem solving.
