Sports, Societies & Other Activities

There is a wide range of sporting and other activities available at DLD College.

Sport is the most popular and is as diverse as football and rock climbing. The film, media and arts department are also very popular centres for after-school programmes.

There is an activities week at the end of each academic year to give students the opportunity to make a film, record their own CD, write for the College newspaper or participate in a challenging sports week.

Deema Marouq enrolled at DLD in September 2005 to study Biology and Chemistry at A2-level and English Literature at AS/A2-level

She gained AAA grades in each of her subjects and went on to read Dentistry at Leeds University Dental School.

“I passed my first year of Dentistry at Leeds with a B (one of only a few in the year). Thought you might be proud. I would really like to thank you and DLD for helping me get to where I am today. Without Geoff, I am quite certain I would not have achieved the A I needed in Chemistry and his technique of drawing a procedure before carrying it out is still helping me get through. Please extend my thanks to all my teachers. I owe each of them so much.”

Mingou Kim enrolled at DLD College in January 2006 from Changwon, South Korea.

He studied Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics and gained AAAB grades in the GCE A-level examinations in June 2007. He also achieved a Distinction in the Advanced Extension Award paper in Mathematics and finished in the top 5 in the country in Pure Mathematics at AS-level. He improved his IELTS score from 6.5 to 8.0 while he studied at DLD.

Mingou Kim received offers from the universities of Bristol, Durham, Warwick and York, but decided to accept the offer from Imperial College of Science & Technology, London, to read Biomedical Sciences.

“The teachers have been amazing and not just in the subjects they teachers as they have all helped improve my spoken and written English. You have freedom in the sense that although you have to attend lessons you study in the Library in your free periods. Claire Davies was a great help with my university application and we met every Monday to develop my personal statement. I chose DLD because I liked their website and it is in a great location.”

Sport

At DLD we do not underestimate what an important part sport plays in any school curriculum.

Participation in sports is out most popular extra-curricular activity. Most sport sessions start at 4.00pm or 4.40pm although gym, aerobics and yoga take place in the middle of the day.

The Head of Sport arranges teams, venues, fixtures and transport to and from DLD. Sports on offer include:

  • Football
  • Basketball
  • Tennis
  • Rock climbing
  • Golf
  • Netball
  • Yoga
  • Aerobics
  • Gym

Outdoor football and tennis are played in Regent’s Park. Floodlit and indoor tennis take place at the Westways Sports Centre. The gym and swimming pool is in Seymour Place, a few minutes’ walk from the college.

Drama, Film and TV

All students, whether or not they are taking A Level Drama, may audition for DLDYT productions.

There are two productions a year: one in the Autumn Term and the other in Activities Week. Our most recent production in December 2008 was The Tempest, performed as a Clown Ballet.

Previous productions include Gormenghast, The Trojan Women, The Government Inspector, A Christmas Carol, and The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. Performances take place in our 80 seat theatre.

Film and Television Production

We are able to use our theatre as a cinema or television studio, allowing students to get involved in Film or TV production.

Students create their own short films, usually on a three week cycle, working on the script in week one, shooting in week two and editing in week three.

The edit suite is equipped with Apple Mac G5s.

Music, Art and Photography

There is a state of the art recording studio equipped with 10 Apple Macs, a sound booth, drum kit, guitars and pianos and a DLD band that practises weekly.

The Music Department organise chamber concerts, extra curricular tuition in music technology and our fund raising event ‘Musithon’, a non-stop marathon of live music on the last afternoon of each term. Students wishing to practise voice or piano can book the sound booth.

The Art Department run extra-curricular photography, fine art, pottery, sculpture and art gallery visits.

Life classes take place once a week in the evening. Students wishing to continue with Art or take up Photography, but not take the subject at A Level, are able to book extra curricular sessions with the Heads of Art / Photography.
