In the June 2009 A-level examinations he was awarded a Distinction in the Advanced Extension Award Mathematics paper together with an Outstanding grade in the STEP Mathematics 1 paper.
In addition to his excellent A-level passes, he also achieved
passes at AS-level in Further Mathematics (Additional) (grade A)
and Economics (grade C).
He scored a total of 2703/2900 marks and a total of 700 UCAS
points.
He was awarded Silver medals in the 2009-2010 Mathematics
Olympiad and the 2009-2010 Physics Olympiad (round 2).
During the summer of 2009 he undertook an engineering internship on the shop floor of a railway maintenance yard in Dalian. He worked as a junior assistant in one of the teams tasked with scheduled maintenance of a fleet of diesel locomotives.
