On Tuesday 6th March students from the Abbey College Cambridge Volunteering Club paid a visit to the college charity East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH). The charity is based in north Cambridge and supports families and care for children and young adults with life-threatening conditions.
Our students were met by Polly West, EACH Community Fundraiser for Cambridgeshire, who were welcomed to the hospice, explained their role in the community and how they support not only the children in their care but what they do for their families as well. There were not actually any children on site during our visit and this meant that we were able to get a tour of their marvelous facilities, including their sensory room, music room and crafts room. There was also a very peaceful area for prayer and reflection called “The Haven” that has an instant calming effect on anyone who enters. The hospice also has it’s own lovely gardens and swimming pool.
Our students were amazed and extremely interested by the tremendous work the hospice and their staff do. They were amazed that is costs nearly £5,000 per day to run the hospice. As our college charity we are proud to have contributed over £30,000 to EACH over the last four years through various fund raising efforts by our staff and students. EACH are extremely grateful to Abbey College Cambridge for our continued support, and we’re sure certain that our visit has encouraged our volunteers to organise even more charitable events in the future.
