DLD College London students were treated to a fascinating film journalism workshop courtesy of Helen O’Hara, Editor at Large of Empire film magazine. Empire is one of the most popular film magazines in the world. Helen gave the students some excellent advice about structure and content, explaining that a film review is similar to constructing an argument for a debate team. She emphasised how students need to think about the position they want to take and then build an argument to support that opinion, and encouraged students to break the film down into its component parts – cinematography, writing, acting – and decide which parts stand out the most, and then use those elements to build their argument.
John Branney, Head of Film and Media, added: “It is really amazing that Helen has given up her time to share her experiences with the students and inspire the journalists of the future. Her enthusiasm for film is infectious and the students loved hearing her thoughts on film and writing about film. This will be a great foundation for the new weekly watch feature for Film Club where students are being encouraged to write and publish film reviews”.
