A-Level Students Uncover the Allure of Luxury and Power at British Museum Exhibition

19th June 23

Classics 1024x683

On Thursday, June 15th, DLD College London’s Year 12 Classics students embarked on an exciting trip to the Luxury and Power: Persia to Greece exhibition hosted at the British Museum. As part of their learning experience, they will undertake a material culture/art project in the upcoming week, focusing on exploring and recreating the exhibition’s most significant artifact. The students found immense joy in venturing beyond the confines of the classroom, as this invaluable excursion allowed them to apply their teachings practically and truly appreciate the significance of witnessing the artifacts firsthand.

The exhibition notably highlights the interplay between luxury, prestige, and power, which reshaped the Greek world in the aftermath of the Graeco-Persian Wars. One particularly awe-inspiring discovery was the Persian King’s tent, described by Herodotus as a treasure trove filled with opulent gold and silver furnishings. The embroidered hangings left Pausanias astonished, barely able to believe his own eyes.
